2011 Heritage Grants

 

Introduction

Mission

To encourage and support UCC churches to begin new programs or substantially strengthen existing programs that improve the lives of seniors in their communities or support the families and others who care for them.

 

History

St. Paul's Church Home was founded in 1924 as a ministry of St. Paul's Evangelical and Reformed Church (now St. Paul's United Church of Christ).  St. Paul's Family Resources Foundation was established in 1981 to support the Church Home and, subsequently, Oak Meadows Senior Housing which opened in 1998. The Church Home was closed in 2006.  The Foundation, which is now independent from St. Paul's UCC, wishes to honor the organization's history and its longstanding mission of serving seniors through the sponsorship of the Heritage Grants.

 

Heritage Grants

Grants will be awarded in 2011 to selected Minnesota churches of the United Church of Christ, with a maximum of $10,000 to any individual church. To be supported, a project must improve the lives of seniors or support the families and others who care for them. The project can involve other churches or organizations but the applying church must be the primary administrator of the program. We expect programs to work toward becoming self-sustaining.

 

Proposals are due October 31, 2010 and the awards will be announced no later than the first week of January 2011.  Funds will be distributed after the church sends a signed grant acceptance letter to the Foundation.

Frequently Asked Questions 

Question: Can we apply for a grant on a program that will extend beyond 2011?

Answer: Yes, as long as the total program grant requested is $10,000 or less.  We expect to receive an interim report on program progress at the end of the first year and when the grant monies are completely expended.

 

Question: We have previously received a Heritage Grant.  Can we apply for a  new grant to continue the same program?

Answer: Yes, we will accept grant applications for continuation of programs that we have already supported, for up to 2 years of support. It is important that  programs demonstrate a plan to eventually be sustained without further Heritage Grants.  For example, churches should work to recruit volunteers and to stimulate more giving from their members and from community sources. 

 

Question:  What criteria does the Foundation Board use to make its award decisions?

Answer:  The Board expects applicants to answer the questions on the application.  We look favorably on churches that make a time and dollar commitment to the program and leverage the grant money along with other resources to extend the reach of the program.  We prefer programs that address real needs of seniors and their caregivers, especially health, community, and spirituality.

 

Question: Can grant money be used to support pastoral positions?

Answer: Generally speaking, no.  It can be used to pay the salary of a parish nurse for up to 2 grant years.

 

Question:  Can Heritage Grant funds be used to support a UCC church’s program that involves other churches or organizations and/or seniors and caregivers who are not members of the UCC church?

Answer:  Yes, we encourage support for all seniors and their caregivers and also encourage partnerships between the UCC church and other organizations.  However, the UCC church must have a lead role in organizing and administering the program. 

 

Question: What are the plans to continue the Heritage Grants program into the future?

Answer: The decision to continue the Heritage Grants is made annually in the spring by the Board of Directors of St. Paul's Family Resources Foundation.  It is announced at the June meeting of the Minnesota Conference of the United Church of Christ.                                                                           June 2010
